Mon 1st We are seriously beginning to wonder about this year - May and we are still using the heating! It can only improve and we must be due a very good summer to make up for it! From my seat in front of the computer I have been able to watch a BLACK KITE circling over a nearby copse several times over the last 24 hours - so life's not all bad here in Brittany!
Thurs 11th A beautiful, sunny day encouraged us to head to the Salt Marshes, near Guérande, for a spot of bird-watching. Among the birds we saw were, Black-winged Stilt and Avocet in good numbers, Marsh Harrier, Black Kite, Little Egret and a very large and very yellow (underneath) warbler. Butterflies included Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Wall and Brown Argus.
Wed 17th Now that the kittens and Mum have gone back to their rightful owners, I hope to have more time to devote to the serious business of wildlife-watching and web-site up-dating! For the full kitten story, click on the Diary link below. The weather has been very changeable and among one or two warm days, we continue to have dull and wet spells. The Turtle Doves are still busy nesting in the Elder and there is a lot of action around the Kestrels' nest in the Oak. There is one Swallow's nest in Marie's out-house. A Black Kite continues to appear regularly over the garden.
Sun 21st The weather has been atrocious for days now. We have been battered by strong winds and heavy rain. This must be even worse news for the birds and butterflies. I wonder how many chicks have perished? I watched a brave Starling trying to find food this morning - it was simply letting the wind blow it along and then dropping like a stone into the grass to pick up grubs. It then bravely tried to fly back to the nest against the wind - I hope it made it! The only glimpses I've had of butterflies has been as they "flew" past the window, helpless against the storm.
