Wk 1 With May came a change in the weather - colder, wet and windy. A boating accident on 30th April resulted in a dislocated shoulder and the whole month of may off work and left me unable to use my binoculars - a disaster! However I'm very lucky to have a country garden that is host to a fantastic range of wildlife that can be enjoyed from the window. This weeks highlights - Turtle Dove numbers steadily increasing, male Cuckoo calling almost non-stop and readily visible, SWALLOWTAIL butterflies flying right up to the house, Cirl Bunting calling from hedgerow, Black Kites continue to fly overhead, Hawthorn in bloom, Kestrels still busy around their nest (not sure if just sitting adult being fed or chicks also), Broad-bodied Chaser in hedgerow.

Female Broad-bodied Chaser taken in our garden. She was very obliging and posed for several minutes.
Wk 2 Weather even wetter and windier. Highlights this week - a female Cuckoo called and then flew alongside the male who called in-flight; a pair of Hares were present in the field at the bottom of our garden for over two hours during which time they chased about boxing - they were so large that I at first thought I had caught sight of a couple of deer!
Wk 3 Weather improved towards the middle of the week - even hot on Friday and Saturday, but clouded over again today (Sun 20th). We had several visits from BLACK KITES this week. Other highlights included a Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, a count of 6 TURTLE DOVES and a HOOPOE. The male Cuckoo calls almost non-stop and I heard a female bubbling away happily this morning.
Wk 4 Towards the end of the week the weather improved. I saw my first SMALL HEATH and MEADOW BROWN butterflies of the year in the garden. The KESTREL CHICKS hatched and Mum is spending all her time with them whilst Dad goes off hunting. Earlier today I got the telescope set up on the nest and had good views of Mum tearing up some prey and feeding at least one fluffy, white chick. They will stay in the nest for close to a month and we hope to be able to continue to watch their progress daily - our very own nestcam (well nestscope) just like Springwatch. Also of note this week are the CUCKOOS and HOOPOES which are both heard frequently throughout the day. The TURTLE DOVES have taken up residence in their normal nest-site - the Elder at the bottom of the garden, so we are looking forward to watching their progress too.
