Wk 1 CATTLE EGRETS are now a daily sight here at La Belle Vilaine gites - the high count was 7 feeding in the field next-but one to our garden and at least 4 have been present daily. Admittedly, for a good view we need to use the telescope - but they are visible with the naked eye from our office window. My limited knowledge of bird songs/calls came into play this week, helping me to identify 3 species before I saw them: - we had good views of CRESTED TITS in the wood above the river - they were part of a large flock which also included many GOLDCREST and CIRL BUNTING numbers reached 5 in the surrounding fields and hedgerows. Paul was very happy to spot a GREEN WOODPECKER - feeding on the lawn outside the office window! It has continued to visit the lawn all week, giving good views (see photo taken by Paul). We are still awaiting the return of Redwing and Fieldfare to the garden, but in the meantime we have had upwards of 8 SONGTHRUSHES feeding at any one time along with 2 or 3 Blackbirds and the Woodpecker. A flock of around 100 Lapwing entertained us with their acrobatic flight display in nearby farmland yesterday. To round-up a good week's birdwatching we spotted a magnificent, silver-winged, male HEN HARRIER quartering low over a field along the St. Cry to Nivillac road.

Paul caught this Green Woodpecker on camera - just afterwards he executed a very impressive weave through the agility equipment !!!
Wk 2 A small group of FIELDFARES arrived on Saturday (10th) - the first I have recorded this autumn. Since then I have heard several calling as they fly overhead. Some butterflies continued to brave-out the colder weather - Speckled Wood and Red Admiral both present in the garden. On Thursday (15th) I counted at least 100 AVOCET feeding on the mud by the barrage at Arzal.
Wk 3 Saturday (17th) and the REDWINGS are back. We had our first hard ground-frost on Friday morning and again today, followed by beautiful sunny days. Walking the dogs through the woods by our home we again heard CRESTED TIT and GOLDCREST along with large numbers of Long-tailed Tit. The cows have been moved to different pasture and with them went "our" Cattle Egrets - although they are still around in good numbers locally, just not viewable from the window!
