Wk 1 October began wet and windy and quite cold, but here we are on Saturday 7th bathed in sunshine. The chestnut harvest is well underway - we have two trees in our garden and the local area abounds with fallen nuts. Red squirrels and Jays are very busy hoarding for the winter. We still have some butterflies about - mainly Clouded Yellow and Red Admiral. There are still some Swallows passing through - presumably those that had spent the summer much further north as opposed to ones that bred here. On Tuesday I parked up by the sea to have my lunch (in between schools as I am now teaching English almost full time) and counted about 20 Great Crested Grebes and 3 Common Sandpipers. We had close views of a Kingfisher on Sunday (1st) whilst walking our dogs along the beach near Muzillac. Little Owls are calling outside as I write - it's not long until sunset (8 pm at the moment).
Wk 2 Sightings of Swallows continued throughout the week. We also had a Pale Tussock Moth caterpillar on the terrace - a very strange-looking creature (see photo). Sandwich Terns are still about in good numbers. On Sunday I saw a small flock of Thrushes, which may have been Redwing. I have also located a large Starling roost - in the trees near one of the schools I teach at - I arrive there at 8.20 am and the noise is impressive. I intend to go over there at dusk one day to witness the spectacle - something which I saw in Brighton at the (now destroyed) West Pier and which I am looking forward to seeing again. On the home front - we have an addition to the family. Paul surprised me with a kitten for my birthday - needless to say, when he eventually ventures outside he will be wearing a detachable collar with a bell!

Nature in South Brittany, France
Wks 3 and 4 We spent an afternoon apple-picking in a friend's orchard on Sat. 21st - there were plenty of butterflies around enjoying the windfalls - Red Admiral, Peacock, Clouded Yellow (still around on 30th), Comma, Speckled Wood and Large White. On Thursday 26 th and again on Mon 30th a female HEN HARRIER flew over the garden. Little Owls are calling loudly every evening from around sunset and on into the night - one sits just outside our bedroom window and serenades us during the night !
